In his second guest blog, AJ Jamani, the stylish founder of menswear brand HNDSM, shares his insights about grooming essentials and what makes a great product.
I enjoy the whole experience surrounding products: learning about brands, chatting with sales staff, and ultimately experiencing products first hand.
After many years of using pharmacy grooming brands, I contemplated upgrading my bathroom selection as a young adult. As I began exploring the world of grooming, I discovered interesting branding and stories – a process which would eventually result in me finding a similar satisfaction in discovering optimal shaving cream as discovering a great t-shirt.
Now, when I find a grooming brand that I am fond of, I will gradually make my way through their range of offerings. The ones I enjoy the most find a place in my ongoing rotation. Of these essentials, here are five that I use consistently:
Malin+Goetz – Peppermint Body Scrub
Malin+Goetz initially caught my attention with their clean packaging and impeccable distribution. Their products popped up in all of my favourite clothing stores about five years ago. I made my way through their product line, enjoying the different scents and aesthetic upgrade to my bathroom. One of my highlights from the brand is their Peppermint Body Scrub. I find showers are extra refreshing on the days I use this exfoliator.
Kiehl’s – Creme with Silk Groom
Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom is my ideal hair product. It makes your hair presentable while maintaining a natural look. The creme meets my requirements of being subtle, scentless and does not necessitate a daily shampoo. It is perfect for those looking for smooth, rather than sculpted, hair.
Baxter of California – Double Edge Safety Razor
I was looking for an alternative to the standard commercial razor. I like the double edge safety razor for its simplicity and elegant design. It offers a close shave without the tugging that sometimes occurs with multi-blade razors. The upfront investment pays for itself over time as the replacement blades sell for a fraction of their modern equivalents. Note: While the double edge safety razor is intriguing, the replacement blades are not allowed in your carry on luggage. I discovered this first hand at JFK Airport.
Jack Black – Cool CTRL Deodorant
I have tried every non-aluminium deodorant that I can find. Cool CTRL has been the winner so far. The eucalyptus scent is immediately pleasing and I have found that it lasts longer into the day than its competitors.
Tom Ford – Tuscan Leather (Eau du Parfum)
This gift for my girlfriend quickly became a “shared gift” once I was exposed to its scent. I find that one spray is adequate to leave the scent on all day. Interesting fact: Drake’s song, Tuscan Leather, was named after the scent.
