AJ’s Essentials: Autumn / Winter 2014

AJ Jamani is the founder of brilliant menswear brand HNDSM and lover of all things fashion and functional. For his first post as our new style guest blogger, he's going to share some of the essential items that have caught his attention this season.

1. Common Projects Achilles Mid in Black

If I could only own one shoe, this would be the one. I bought my first pair of Common Projects Achilles in 2007 at Nomad in Toronto. They are extremely well made, comfortable and understated. They have accompanied me through summer days, rain and snow. I travel light, which makes ; these shoes ideal as they take me from casual days to dressed-up evenings.

2. B&O H3 Earbuds

These have become an extension of my iPhone. I wear them for several hours every day, for conference calls, commuting and music at my desk. They have a simple design that is made from one piece of aluminum which I love. They are also light, the sound is excellent, and people can hear me clearly on calls. I also really like the fact that B&O will replace them in store if anything goes wrong. To me, this simple approach to warranty really sets the brand apart.

3. HNDSM Hoodie

It has been fun designing our ideal products. The Old Boys hoodie is my favourite piece from our latest collection. We underplayed the graphic by placing it on the back of the hoodie and scaling it down. The hoodie itself was made in Canada alongside a few brands we really admire. It is definitely a piece I am proud of, and something I will be wearing throughout the colder months.

4. Nike Gyakousu Jacket

For the last few seasons Nike has collaborated with Undercover on a collection of technical running gear. The combination of Nike’s innovation with Jun Takahashi’s aesthetic direction has consistently offered an interesting result. I have been very happy with the Sweat Map Jacket from SS14. It’s a great piece for sports or a more technical look on a casual day.

5. Acronym J-38

I wear my Acronym J-38 through the Spring, Fall and rainy days in between. I was sold on the brand after reading about the founder’s uncompromising perspective on functionality. It is one of the few brands that seems to put the end result of their apparel ahead of aesthetics. The J-38 consistently keeps me dry and has enough hidden pockets for all of my daily items. If you need convincing, check out Acronym in action in their video lookbooks.
